What to bring:
Hot Springs & Emerald Pool – In the South of Krabi in the province of Klong Thom District are nature’s own hot-tub jazuzzis known as naam tok rawn in Thai. The water here comes from thermal springs originating deep underground in volcanic chambers. Located in the jungle, this site features naturally hollowed-out ‘bathtubs’ in the smooth stone, filled to the brim with fresh running spring water at a pleasant 35 – 40 degrees Celsius. After a soak, take a refreshing dip in the cool river below. Water from the hot springs flows through the rocks into larger man- bathing pools on the same site and basic changing facilities are now available for visitors. The mineral salts contained in the hot spring water are said to ease a number of ailments, including rheumatism, sciatica and skin complaints.
A visit to the Hot Springs would not be complete without a trip to the nearby Emerald Pool ( Sa Morakot in Thai), this is an astonishingly hued and large natural pool that is filled with pure spring water. The pool is reached via a network of trails through the Khao Nor Chu Chi forest (the longest of which is 1.2km– no climbing required), which offer a glimpse into a unique aquatic ecosystem, fed by the area’s abundant spring water. You’ll pass by a series of clear mini-pools, waterfalls and streams, plus hundreds of species of tropical trees and plants.
The other “must-see” site in the reserve is the brightly coloured ‘Blue Pool’, located some 600m further upstream from the Emerald Pool.
This area is also popular with birders as the forest is home to many rare species, including the endangered Gurney’s Pitta. A full day could easily be spent here as there are many other trails around the site.
Tiger Cave Temple – The Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea) is a Buddhist temple northeast of Krabi, Thailand. One of the most sacred Buddhist sites in the province, it is well known for the tiger paw prints in the cave and a tall Buddha statues which sits at the summit with spectacular views across Krabi Town, mountains and the tropical rain forests. The Tham Sua temple is a Thai Buddhist meditation centre and also has places of archaeological and historical significance. The foundation of the temple dates back to 1975 when a Vipassana monk named Jumnean Seelasettho (Ajahn Jumnean) went to meditate in the cave. During his meditation, he witnessed tigers roaming around the cave. This discovery led to naming the temple Wat Tham Suea. Another legend says that an actual huge tiger used to live and roam the cave. At the top of the mountain there is a large golden Buddha statue. This statue, other temple buildings, and much of Krabi town can be seen from shrine at the top of the stairs.
